Soile Suvanto is photographer artist from Finland and she has been working lately with water, ice, fells and old photos from her childhood. She is interested in human soul, nature and family relations.
Soile has photographed mystery of family relations from 90´s and her latest project was to travel to Lapland with photos from her childhood. Her parents and grandparents loved to travel to Lapland, Kilpisjärvi at holidays and Soile was usually with them.
”I had only old photos and memories left so I decided to go to see if I could understand the mystery of Lapland. Especially my parents and grandparents loved Kilpisjärvi and Saana Fell. Most of the photos are taken there.”
It was very interesting trip to childhood, memories and beautiful landscapes and new serie FELL arose. Now Soile realises why her parents and grandparents love Kilpisjärvi and Saana Fell. And also she fell love in those places, too.
”It was interesting to reflect how significant landscapes, memories and old photos are to us and how important it is to move these feelings from generation to generation.”
Audience has loved these photos, because they can easily look back in their own childhood. There is retrofeeling and nostalgia, when you see photos from 70’s.
At the RIVER serie Soile has photographed the river Oulujoki many years from the same place and it is now photoserie to show that everyday is different and no matter what happens in your life, river just goes on. Photos are printed to finnish plywood, so they give extra texture to photos and they are ecological.
People liked so much this serie, that 11 photos were sold in three weeks at gallery MABD 2020. There are 19 photos on this RIVER -project.
Where Soile lives it is possible to walk on the sea during winter time. You can walk on the sea ice without seeing anybody and just be in the silence and just enjoy sparkling snow and the ice. Soile has photographed serie ICE on the sea ice near Hailuoto with her old Hasselblad camera.
She has studied art photography in University on Industrial Arts in Helsinki at 1990´s. She has had many projects during years, among others her family -photos were in group exhibition ”Family, private matter” in Museum of Finnish Photography Art at 2002.
River, Ice, Fell -soloexhibition was at January 2020 at Gallery MABD in Oulu, Finland. Part of the River, Ice, Fell -serie has shown at Gallery Fogga, Helsinki. Lately, year 2023, River, Ice, Fell -serie has shown at Planetarium Gallery, Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Sodankylä, Finland together with Risto Immonen and Pertti Turunen. Exhibition was curated by Art Curator, Gallerist, Ms Hanna Kress.
